A quick glance in the direction of the men’s changing rooms of any department store and you notice the pattern. Young and old, from all backgrounds and persuasions, men stand in front of the women in their lives, be they mum, girlfriend, grandma or wife, looking a little unsure and anxiously asking “what do you think?” In turn, the women prod and poke, tug on waist bands and inspect buttons and linings. It makes me smile that while the men I know are self-assured in many ways, when it comes to buying work wear, they all run to their mum for advice.
But with Frank's mum firmly installed up north, I knew I needed to step up. So I darted onto Google and did some suit buying research of my own. Now a wedding is for one day, but what if Frank needs to wear his suit for important meetings at work? With so much to think about, I trawled through the advice section of Brook Taverner and slowly began unpicking the enigma that is suit shopping, demystifying terms like ‘side vents’ ‘button cuff’, ‘classic fit’ and ‘slim fit’.
Scrolling through Brook Taverner’s extensive range of suits, I began to thoroughly enjoy myself. I learnt the virtue of hidden pockets, that higher wool content is optimal, and that a half inch of shirt cuff should be visible at the sleeve. Eventually we settled on this little ‘mood board’ of suit options.

Unfortunately time was not on our side, so rather than order a suit online, we braved Oxford Street and dipped into the flagship Marks and Spencer store for the final purchase. After trying on numerous jackets, waistcoats and trousers, we settled on a super slim fit suit in light grey. Feeling a lot more confident about my girlfriend duties, I did the relevant prodding and poking, checking that the shoulder pads ended with his shoulders, that the trouser length hit his shoes at the right point and that it skimmed in at his waist without looking boxy or tight.
Here’s the final choice – a super slim fit number in light grey, which I think looks bloomin’ gorgeous. Girlfriend duty complete!
How about you? Do you have any troublesome duties in store for the men in your life?
